The main reason why we love open source is the ability for reseachers to adapt and develop our Ultimaker to their needs. And with the rise of public awareness for 3d printing, we see an increase of researchers that understand the potentials of the ‘open source’ approach:
Ernst Jan Bos is a Dutch medical researcher specialized in plastic surgery at VUMC, Amsterdam. He is experimenting with PLA printed ‘outer-ears’, his plan is to put patient’s stem-cells in the ‘outer-ears’ which inturn will grow into cartilage and form a new ear. He hopes to develop a technique which can be applied for facial reconstruction of burn victims.
You can support his research by donating to Flintwave, a kickstarter for medical research.
We are honored that Ernst Jan uses Ultimaker to further this important research. Bellow is the flintway video (Dutch).
